Nowadays many countries try to solve the problem of
ageing of the society. For instance, people who live on the Wight Island come
up with an idea of a voluntary cooperation – if you take care of elderly people
for an hour, you will get an hour of care in the future. There is no doubt that
this idea has a lot of advantages and disadvantages.
First of all, a voluntary cooperation is important for
elderly people, especially for those who are ill or disabled. Most of them need
special medical treatment almost 24 hours a day. Thanks to the volunteers, they
do not have to worry about problems with their health.
Secondly, this solution is great for young people who
do voluntary work. They do not have to be afraid that they will be left alone
when they become old and ill. If they work a lot, they will provide a safe and
calm future for themselves.
However, there is a risk that a volunteer will lose
his ‘hours of care’ when he will die unexpectedly. Furthermore, when somebody
do not have any time to do voluntary work, he will have to pay for the
treatment.
To sum up, the actions which are taken to fight
against a problem of ageing population have some pros and cons. They seem to be
equally beneficial for volunteers and elderly people, but some of them may not
be able to take advantage of them.
